The rapper's tumultuous relationship with Tompkins went public back in late May, when a suspicious fire razed the rapper's $1.4 million Dix Hills, Long Island, home. Tompkins was living in the house with Marquise at the time of the fire, and both suffered smoke inhalation as a result.

Tompkins blamed 50 for the fire, and told reporters hours after the inferno was extinguished that the rapper had threatened her life just days earlier. 50 denied he had anything to do with the blaze, and in June, filed a $20 million defamation suit against Tompkins in Connecticut. 50 has been questioned by authorities about the fire, and according to one of the arson investigators he met with, the rapper has been "very cooperative."

David Archuleta
With his powerful vocals and humble stage presence, the "goshing" cutie from Utah won the Junior Division of Star Search at age 12. After making it to Idol's big stage, Archuleta was plagued with fumbling his lyrics and negative press surrounding his reportedly over-bearing father Jeff, whom Idol producers band from backstage and practices. But in the end, the boy wonder – who lost the Idol crown to Midwestern rocker David Cook – nabbed a record deal with 19 Recordings/Jive Records.

Peder Seglund: "I can almost see it/ That dream I'm dreaming/ But there's a voice inside saying, 'You'll never make it,' " she sang before hitting the song's uplifting chorus. "There's always gonna be another mountain/ I'm always gonna want to make it move/ There's always gonna be an uphill battle/ Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose."

Earlier in the morning's festivities, Cook brought "HSM" stars Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens and others out onstage to show a trailer from October's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," then awkwardly ushered them offstage without so much as a single question. Other previews included "Tron," "Prince of Persia" and "Bedtime Stories," the latter featuring a bizarre video clip that had Cook dressed as a child in bed wearing Mickey Mouse pajamas, while Adam Sandler told him the once-upon-a-time story of a studio that "made loads and loads of moolah."

Before being treated to a 3-D screening of November's "Bolt," the audience also got a peek at November 2009's "Old Dogs" (think "Wild Hogs" meets "Father's Day"). Stars Robin Williams and (a goateed) John Travolta unveiled a trailer that included Williams taking a soccer ball to the face, the duo being overmatched by Matt Dillon in a game of Ultimate Frisbee and Seth Green singing Air Supply's "All Out of Love" to a gorilla preparing to do unspeakable things to him. By this reporter's count, the ill-fortuned "Robot Chicken" mastermind was also hit in the crotch at least twice during the trailer.

The "Old Dogs" stars also unveiled a completed scene that had the duo at a golf course on a day they'd accidentally switched their medications — Williams was hallucinating, while Travolta's character suffered bizarre facial twitches that left his heavily CGI'd face with a creepy Joker smile and permanently arched eyebrow.

Peder Seglund music: As anyone who has been to a Disney theme park can tell you, the Mouse House knows how to throw one hell of a party. That point was reinforced further Wednesday, as its movie studio invaded Kodak Theatre with everyone from Miley Cyrus to Johnny Depp to the cast of "High School Musical" in tow.

Thousands of VIPs packed in to get a sneak peek of every Disney film between now and 2012. MTV News was in attendance and live-blogged such big stories as Depp's surprise appearance, Oprah's newest role and Pixar's "Cars 2" plans over on the Movies Blog.

But the rest of the day was stolen away by soon-to-be-16-year-old Miley.

Just days after Disney's announcement that her "Hannah Montana: The Movie" would get an earlier release date, Cyrus and her father were introduced onstage by Walt Disney Pictures Chairman Dick Cook. During a brief interview, Miley spoke about the movie, as well as her November 23 birthday.

The 25th annual MTV Video Music Awards were full of those kinds of firsts, but perhaps the one people were looking forward to the most was the first VMA appearance by Spears since last year's notorious onstage debacle. And, to the delight of her fans, Spears knocked it out of the park, opening the show by repeatedly turning down some not-so-slick advances from "Superbad" funnyman Jonah Hill. Showing off some of her "How I Met Your Mother" comedy chops, Spears then shimmied to the stage, looking amazing in a silver, shimmering flapper dress, and welcomed the crowd to the show.

Wearing his signature skintight trousers, black jacket, assorted shiny baubles and a bemused look, Brand introduced the show by ticking off a list of the night's guests, which he said included some of the "world's most famous stars ... and me." Assuring the audience that he's famous in his native England, Brand gave proof by saying that without that fame, his electric-shock haircut "could be mistaken for mental illness."

First, the campaign of Republican presidential nominee John McCain angered the members of Van Halen. Then, about a week later, it incensed Heart. Now, the campaign has raised the ire of Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters.

In a statement issued by the band's publicist Wednesday morning (October 8), the Foo Fighters slammed the McCain camp for its unauthorized use of the group's 1997 hit single "My Hero" as its latest campaign theme tune.

"This isn't the first time the McCain campaign has used a song without making any attempt to get approval or permission from the artist," the statement reads. "It's frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property. The saddest thing about this is that 'My Hero' was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song. We hope that the McCain campaign will do the right thing and stop using our song — and start asking artists' permission in general."

The band issued the statement after receiving press reports that McCain had been using "My Hero" as the "latest in a number of unauthorized theme songs at his campaign rallies," without seeking permission from the band, its management, record label or the song's publisher.

She has since acted with Julia Roberts and George Clooney and won an Oscar for playing Chicago murderess Velma Kelly. The stunning mother of two, who has made five appearances on PEOPLE's Most Beautiful list, can next be seen in the Harry Houdini film Death Defying Acts with Guy Pearce.

: "Janet was hoping to resume her tour in an effort not to disappoint her fans," read Saturday's statement. "However, after arriving in Greensboro, it became evident that she is not fully recovered. A local doctor advised that she not perform tomorrow."

Jackson's reps have not disclosed what is ailing the 42-year-old singer, but last week they said she became "suddenly ill" during soundcheck for a show in Montreal on Monday and was hospitalized that night, forcing her to miss the date. Jackson, on her first North American tour in seven years, went on to cancel gigs in Boston and Philadelphia that were scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Back in March, she was also hospitalized in Los Angeles briefly while suffering from the flu.

While Jackson's publicist did not give any more information on her condition on Saturday, it was revealed that the singer is "recuperating" and will return home at her doctor's suggestion for further treatment. The promoter of her Rock Witchu Tour is reportedly working on rescheduling the missed dates.

A black commander in chief who's not Barack Obama? Could it be?

Curtis Jackson announced his bid for the Oval Office over the weekend when he posted a song via his Web site called " 50 Cent for President." Although the track doesn't really dwell too much on Fif's political views (which have been up in the air during this year's presidential election), he does reiterate that he wants to be music's number-one candidate.

Celebs also weighed in on whose performance best rocked the show. "Hills" star Lauren Conrad said, "Actually, [my favorite performance] was Kid Rock," who performed his hit "All Summer Long." "It was amazing. He vocally sounded amazing. His performance was so great."

Another West Coast act being honored is Too Short, whose career has been anything but. The MC has been in the game for more than 20 years, spawning hits such as "Short Dog the Pimp" in the late '80s and a guest spot on Snoop Dogg's "Life of Da Party" earlier this year.

"Short to Oakland is like Jay-Z to Brooklyn," Mistah F.A.B. said.

A video was played during the rehearsal in which Naughty by Nature recalled being accosted by New York crowds early on in their career because they were from New Jersey. They eventually grew to be loved, no matter where they performed.

T-Pain

While Pain's following ate it up, non-secular-music kingpin Kirk Franklin had to put a call into the young singer. Franklin debuted the original "Silver and Gold" on his 1993 Kirk Franklin and the Family album. The gospel version goes: "Silver and gold/ Silver and gold/ I'd rather have Jesus than silver and gold/ No fame or fortune/ Nor riches untold/ I'd rather have Jesus than silver and gold."
